Background of the Study
Digital forensics is the process of collecting, analyzing, and preserving electronic data for the purpose of investigating and responding to cybercrime or security incidents. In university networks, digital forensics plays a vital role in identifying and analyzing security breaches, tracking unauthorized access, and recovering lost data (Johnson & Lee, 2024). Given the increasing frequency and complexity of cyberattacks, universities are recognizing the importance of digital forensics in protecting their networks and ensuring compliance with data protection laws.
Federal University, Gashua, Yobe State, is no exception, as it faces an evolving landscape of cyber threats ranging from phishing and ransomware to unauthorized access attempts. The university’s network security framework can benefit from a robust digital forensics strategy to investigate and respond to incidents more effectively. This study aims to explore the role of digital forensics in enhancing network security at Federal University, Gashua, by examining the current forensic practices, identifying gaps, and proposing improvements.
Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Gashua, lacks a comprehensive digital forensics strategy to address network security breaches. While certain security measures are in place, there is a need for a systematic approach to investigate and mitigate the effects of cyberattacks on university networks. This study aims to explore how digital forensics can be integrated into the university’s network security strategy to improve threat detection, evidence gathering, and incident response.

The findings will contribute to developing a more comprehensive security strategy, enabling faster incident response and improving the university’s overall cybersecurity posture.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses solely on the role of digital forensics in university network security at Federal University, Gashua. It will not cover physical security or broader IT management practices. Additionally, it will focus on the university's internal network and not external collaborations or third-party services.
